Survivors commemorate the Bhopal disaster, also known as the Bhopal gas tragedy, a gas leak incident that killed 15,000 people on the night of December 2, 1984.

Footage filmed on Wednesday (December 2), the 36th anniversary of what is considered the world's worst industrial disaster, shows the family members of victims lighting candles in their memory.

Over 15,000 people were killed, and 500,000 more were affected by the toxic methyl isocyanate leak in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Leaders of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh (BGPMSKS), a trade union of women survivors and Children against Dow Chemicals, are demanding compensation from the multi-national company for the families of survivors who died of coronavirus, saying the gas leak had a long-lasting effect on their health.

Several rights organisations are also demanding punishment for those responsible for the tragedy, a rehabilitation plan for survivors, and the removal of toxic chemicals lying on the plant premises.

Bhopal Gas Peedit Stationery Karmachari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangarsh Morcha, and Children against Dow Chemicals- demanded from the multi-national company additional compensation for the families of gas tragedy survivors who died of the pandemic, saying that the gas leak had a long-lasting effect on them.
