Aussie man runs 42 kilometres in his garden hoping to spread awareness of lockdown loneliness
This avid triathlete completed an entire 26.2-mile (42.2km) marathon by running laps around his front yard.
In the midst of a lockdown and with all events for the year being cancelled, Adam Barbalet resisted the temptation to give in to laziness and ran an incredible 1,320 laps of his front yard.
Central to Adam’s decision to run an isolation marathon was to raise awareness about the mental health effects of isolation and a lack of outdoor time.
The feat took place in April when home isolation was officially enforced in South Australia.
Speaking about the marathon Adam said: "It was far tougher than I had originally anticipated.
"I have run approximately 15-20 marathons in the last five years, and this was by far the toughest, not only mentally, but physically.
"There was excitement and anticipation at the start, and my wife was outside to support me – but after 30 minutes of watching in the cold dark, she went inside."
He later said: "It was just me, and my own thoughts running around in a circle in the dark, that took approximately 15 seconds to complete.
"After running in the same direction for 2.5hrs (13.6 miles) my hip and knee were aching on one side and my wife came up with the great suggestion to change direction!"
For Adam, overcoming the challenge of running an isolation marathon wasn’t the only reward.
His video was shared by friends and family, sparking debate in the community and inspiring people he hadn’t met before to embark on a fitness challenge.
