Rare and close interaction with an endangered humpback dolphin in Mozambique

Buy video

This clip was filmed on a scientific research expedition to Mozambique in February 2020, to find acoustic recordings of the rare and endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphin. After nearly a month of looking, researchers from Sea Search found this individual in Ponta do Ouro, amongst a group of bottlenose dolphins. With under 500 individuals estimated to be left in South Africa, the humpback dolphin is South Africa's most endangered marine mammal, with even less information available on the state of their population in Mozambique and further along the western Indian Ocean. This footage provides rare video evidence of humpback dolphin whistling behavior and vocal repertoire, of which very little is currently known.
