A live heart was transported between two hospitals in a specially arranged passenger-free metro train in southern India on February 2.

The train covered 21 kilometres in 30 minutes through the city of Hyderabad, less than half the time it would have taken to transport the beating heart by road even with a free passage for the ambulance.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail officials created a green corridor to move the heart from Kamineni hospitals to Apollo hospitals to save a critical patient.

A team from Apollo hospitals started their journey with the live organ around 4:40 pm, and the train crossed 16 stations in 30 minutes.

An ambulance was kept ready at the exit station to move the heart to the Apollo hospitals where a 44-year-old critical patient awaited an urgent transplantation.
.
Dr. AGK Gokhale of Apollo Hospitals said when they learnt of the availability of a healthy organ from a 45-year-old brain-dead person in Kamineni hospitals, the distance between the two hospitals and the traffic on road became the main challenge.

Further, he explained: “Short of a helicopter, we thought this is the best option available. We saved half-an-hour to 45 minutes.”
