Gruesome festival in India sees worshippers insert hooks in their backs to hang from cranes
In southern India, a unique and gruesome festival took place on March 12, which saw Hindu devotees pierce their flesh with hooks and suspend themselves from cranes as a form of worship.
The festival of Mayanakollai, filmed here in Angalaman temple in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, features festival devotees forming a procession from the temple and marching towards a graveyard to perform some rituals over there at midnight.
In that procession, some devotees dress as gods and goddesses, while others pierce their upper backs with hooks and will be hung from cranes in midair.
Other acts include piercing 'Trisoolam', three-edged rods, through their mouths, or carrying fire pots with bare hands.
