Driver encounters wild Elephant

An amazing video has emerged of a driver's encounter with a huge bull elephant at the Kruger National Park, South Africa earlier this month.

The video, captured on a dashboard-mounted camera, shows the curious elephant standing in front of the vehicle while trying to defend its herd.

At one point the animal performs a mock charge in an apparent attempt to intimidate the driver.

Writing online about the experience, the filmer wrote "This is a small section of a wild elephant encounter that we had close to the Lower Sabie Rest Camp in Kruger National Park.

"The vegetation is very lush in late Summer, and we stopped when a huge Bull Elephant crossed the road a bit higher up. Only after stopping did we notice another part of the herd taking a dust bath a bit closer to our right.

"I had a GoPro mounted on the dashboard, and recorded the elephant sighting from this point on. At this stage more vehicles stopped behind us and as we couldn't really go anywhere, it was best to stay put and hope for the best. The calves and young adolescent elephants took a great interest in the vehicle, and walked directly towards us and even mock charged to show us that we were on their turf.

I kept the audio track to keep the video authentic, and it serves at a reminder that these rare encounters with wild animals can be both thrilling and a little scary at the same time. I only took a few photos, as it seemed more appropriate to be alert and monitor the situation."
