Residents Are Heartbroken as a New Eviction and Tree Fellings granted to Wandsworth Council and Taylor Wimpey Homes at York Gardens
York Gardens, London, UK. 13th May 2021. Even if the renowned 100 years old black poplar tree protected by Sting, Dame Judy Dench and Lou Reed, among the others, has been chopped almost two months ago, the residential community gathered to save the tree has not disappeared in Wandsworth. Last 19th April a new “tree-sitting” project started at London’s York Gardens, Battersea. In a bid to save further 25 trees from felling, new and old activists and residents gathered again to save the trees due for cutting down to make way for a new part of the local housing "regeneration" scheme by the Council of Wandsworth and Taylor Wimpey Homes. Today, after 25 days of occupation, the Court has granted possession of the land to Taylor-Whimpey with a few feeble hopes that Wandsworth Council would undertake further consultations. No real consideration has been given to proofs of bats and birds nesting in the vegetation.
