Southwark residents protested against Southwark Council

Southwark residents protested against Southwark Council's relentless destruction of trees and green public spaces. In the last few weeks alone, Southwark has seen destruction of an established, much-loved community orchard in Camberwell; felling of six mature trees in the name of Aylesbury 'regeneration'; felling of trees in the Heygate forest.

To mark this, as well as point the hypocrisy of the council's assembly on 'Green and Sustainable Southwark', local residents organised a funeral procession, carrying the coffin of destroyed environment through streets of Southwark. A beautiful cardboard tree symbolised the devastating destruction Southwark Council is carrying out, effectively destroying the lives of the people who live in the borough now as well as the future generations. The protesters chanted along the way, alerting the passers-by to the scale of the disaster.

When the protest reached the Walworth Academy, where the Council Assembly was taking place, they sang 'Southwark Oddity', asking Peter John (leader of Southwark Council) to listen and acknowledge the disastrous consequences of the council's actions.
