Dramatic moment shark bites animal handler in Thailand
This is the dramatic moment a 100kg shark sunk its teeth into an animal handler’s leg in Thailand.
Due to low tide, three bull sharks were being relocated to another pond at Kung Kraben Aquaculture Demonstration Facility in Chanthaburi province when the incident happened on July 23.
As the men waded through the water, a ten-year-old shark panicked and attacked one of the officers Boontem Singsura, 55, by biting him on his right leg when he sat on its head to keep it under control.
Shocked colleagues quickly rushed the injured officer out of the water to prevent the sharks from smelling the blood and inducing a frenzy before alerting the medical staff for help.
Colleague Manas Kongsri, 50, said they were luring the shark into a tunnel when Boontem put his weight on the creature’s head and it resisted.
He said: ‘We thought the shark would be familiar with our presence because we once performed CPR on it and also put an oxygen tube in its mouth. Then this happened.
‘It was terrifying. I would not dare go into the shark pond ever again. Boontem’s wound was also big and the blood just kept on flowing out from his leg.’
The injured animal handler’s wound had sheets of flesh hanging out with the shark’s bite marks and his jeans were also torn apart.
The medical staff rushed to the spot to give first aid before bringing Boontem to Tha Mai Hospital for further treatment.
Boontem received stitches for his bite wounds and had no other serious injuries aside from it while all three sharks were transferred successfully to a new pond.
