Chicken and bottled water were among the items running low on Thursday (July 29) at this Lidl store in Woolwich, south-east London, amid concern that the 'pingdemic' will have a knock-on effect to supermarkets and stock.

The latest figures reveal a record 689,313 alerts were sent to those using the NHS contact-tracing app in England & Wales in the week up to July 21.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that ministers have been warned by supermarket bosses that the 'pingdemic' is leading to panic buying and staff shortages.
