A posh coastal town dubbed 'Chelsea-on-Sea' was left under several feet of water today due to flash floods.

Shops and residents in Salcombe, were forced to carry out a major clean up operation after heavy rain overwhelmed the Devon town.

The heavy rain arrived around 9am today (Wed) after the Met Office had issued an amber weather warning for the region.

A video captured by Billy Hole in Plymouth looking at Mount Batten Breakwater on board the Royal William Yard ferry shows a lightning strike making contact with the water.

Other towns and villages also suffered flooding damage this morning with several lightning strikes being reported in the city of Plymouth.

Children at Mount Street Primary School were evacuated when fire services were called to the scene after reports of the smell of burning due to a lightning strike.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said it is believed no-one was injured.

A spokesperson said: "We received the call at 9.57am and two crews initially attended."

Witnesses said the children were evacuated to the school playground and took shelter in the greenhouses. They have all since returned to the classroom.
