This is the terrifying moment a wild elephant chased and attacked a group of people in northeast India on Saturday (September 11).

Eyewitness video filmed and shared with Newsflare by a 20-year-old local named Safikul Islam shows the elephant charging at a group of people in the Borjuli tea estate in Assam state.

He explained that villagers often go to the toilet in rural areas and this is where he heard the screams of the locals. He immediately rushed to the scene and began filming the animal's attack.

The elephant runs at high speed towards the group running towards a river and is heard trumpeting loudly. Those fleeing jump into the shallow river but the elephant is seen striking one of those fleeing as the rest scamper away, running through the water as the elephant follows them in.

One person sustained serious injuries in the attack according to local media.
