An artist from India made this cool model of a biplane using 1,360 matchsticks.

Saswat Ranjan Sahoo from Puri in the state of Odisha says it took him five days to complete the Westland Wapati model to mark National Air Force Day on October 8.

Saswat Ranjan Sahoo, artist made a model of westland wapiti using 1360 matchsticks on the occasion of 8 October, National Air Force Day.It took me 5 days to make this model whose length is 33 inch and breadth is 40 inch. I made this model to pay tribute to our real heroes who sacrificed their lives to save our lives.This year India is going to celebrate 89th Air-Force Day. By making this model I pay my respect to our soldiers of the Indian Air-force said Saswat Ranjan Sahoo, artist of Odisha.

The Westland Wapiti was the first Airplane stationed by the Indian Air Force [formerly Royal Indian Air Force] with No.1 Squadron on 1st April,1933. They were commissioned Along with 5 Indian pilots. These planes were retired in 1942 from the Air Force.

Also known as ‘Bharatiya Vayu Sena’, the Indian Air Force was established in the country on October 8, 1932, by the British Empire. The first operational squadron came into being in April 1933. However, it was only after the participation in World War II, that the Air Force in India came to be known as the Royal Indian Air Force.

The Air Force in India was officially raised in 1932 as the supporting force of the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom. Since then, the day has been celebrated every year as Indian Air Force Day.

The Wapiti is named for the wapiti, also known as elk, one of the largest species of the deer family and one of the largest land mammals in North America and eastern Asia.
