Youth constructs penny-farthing model using matchsticks in eastern India
On the occasion of World Bicycle Day, a teenaged boy promoted the use of bicycles as it is an eco-friendly mode of transport that provides numerous health benefits to people in eastern India's Odisha on June 3. The incident took place in Kumbharapada in Puri.
Visuals feature a young boy dedicating his precious time to create the model of penny-farthing in his house. Following this, he works on his project and assembles the matchsticks in precise order. After fixing all the minor details of the large front wheel, he sets up the entire component and displays it outside for public view.
Penny-farthing was the first machine to be termed as a bicycle and was popularly used during the 1870s to 1880s as its large front wheel provided high speed. The bike was made entirely of metal, and the tires were fashioned out of rubber. However, the center of gravity often caused the person riding it to topple forward whenever it hit any obstacle.
Taking inspiration from this, an 18-year-old boy named Saswat Ranjan Sahoo built its model by using around 3653 matchsticks. The size of this art is 50 inches in length, with a width of 25 inches, while it took him seven days to prepare the handicraft to exhibit it on World Bicycle Day. Moreover, Saswat wanted to raise awareness among people about the effectiveness of cycles as it is more affordable and reliable. He recommended people to lead a good and healthy life while preserving the environment.
