Tens of thousands of worshippers braved the pandemic to make a pilgrimage to the vast Aparecida basilica in the interior of Sao Paulo state, some traveling on foot for days to reach Tuesday’s celebration of the nation’s patron saint, Our Lady of Aparecida.

On a normal year, the cathedral can welcome up to 35,000 people. But with the pandemic still killing an average of over 400 Brazilians every day, services had to be downsized for the second year in a row.

Interviews translation:
"We left Guarulhos from the Sakamoto 2 gas station, we walked 60 kilometres in the first day, 40 km on the second day and another 40 on the third day. Today we are finishing thanks to God and have less than 10km to go. Our motivation to do this is gratitude, learning and especially trying to understand, find yourself and know your own limits. This made the change happen along the way, sometimes you are alone and need to understand your rhythm so as not to injuring and being able to reach the distinction."

"Hello, I'm Amanda, I left Guarulhos to learn to have fun. My biggest lesson was seing that God is fluid, because he doesn't make the water appear here in front of us, but it flows in people's hearts and they bring it water for us, this was very valuable. Long live Our Lady!"

"My name is Yasmim, I'm from Guarulhos and my first day was very challenging for me. One of our friends got injured and because of that she needed to reduce speed, it was the day we walked the most, from 6 AM until 10 PM. But we find God in small details and it's been an incredible experience for me."
