A protest against the pension changes for municipal workers in Sao Paulo, Brazil, ended in confrontations with police on Wednesday 10 November.

The trouble flared when some of those present tried to invade the City Council building.

They were dispersed with tear gas and rubber bullets as protesters threw rocks and bottles, and set fire to garbage in the streets.

The bill to amend the Organic Law (PLO) received 37 votes in favour and 18 against. The amendment means that around 63,000 retirees who earn more than the minimum wage will start to contribute to municipal social security at a rate of 14%.
