Severe weather in Chalkidiki in Greece has led to flooding and serious damage to some of the coastal villages.

The footage shot on Wednesday (December 15) shows flooded areas and beach properties partly collapsed into the sea which has washed away the foundations and eroded the shoreline.

Desperate property owners have stowed piles of rocks to create water barriers in an attempt to stop the waves from continuing to wash under their gardens and houses.

The coming winter months are expected to bring more severe weather and flooding in the region.

The phenomenon of rising sea level and erosion of the coastline intensified after the severe weather that prevailed in the previous days in areas of Halkidiki,Greece. The sea flooded several meters to the mainland causing underwater streets, damage to coastal houses, utility networks unearthed while several roads suffered extensive damage as the underground was eaten by the tide. The wave brought mountains of algae many meters away of the shore at the entrances of houses in Nea Potidea a popular summer holiday destination, while roads in Iraklia and Kallikrateia summer resorts were covered with sand and pebbles giving the impression that the beach was moved to another location. Rising water levels have been observed for some years but over time the sea has come to invade coastal settlements since the front beaches that once existed have disappeared. The water has also "swallowed" coastal roads eroding the natural soil that exists below and continued after the sand of the beach. Desparate property owners stow piles of rocks to make water barriers in an attempt to stop the waves crashing in their yards while with every severe weather, especially in winter, the sea reaches the infrastructure even more.
