Chinese man kidnapped as toddler reunites with family using map drawn from memory
A kidnapped man reunited with his family after 33 years apart by drawing a map of his village from his memory at the age of 4.
Video filmed in Lankao County in Henan Province on December 28, 2021 shows a map of a village drawn by a man named Li Jingwei from his memory.
Another clip shows Li kneeling down in front of his biological mother and then hugging her when they reunited at Lankao Police Station after 33 years.
According to reports, Li was abducted from his home village in China’s Yunnan province by his neighbour in 1989 and was sold to a family in Lankao County.
Li was inspired to look for his biological family after seeing two other abduction cases ended in reunion in media.
Although Li was unable to recall the name of his home village, he drew a map of the village with key features including a school, a bamboo forest and a pond from his memories at the age of 4 and shared it on Douyin, or Chinese TikTok.
On 24 December, 2021, Li's map was matched by police to a Yunnan village where there was a woman whose son had disappeared. After taking the DNA tests, Li was identified as the son.
Li planned to celebrate Chinese New Year (February 1) with his biological family at his home village in Yunnan.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
