Lviv city council in western Ukraine has begun the process of protecting statues and other historical monuments in the case of a Russian air attack, seen here on Friday (March 3).

This is done in an attempt to prevent damage in the event that the city is bombed.

Lviv, founded in the late Middle Ages, has largely escaped the current Russian invasion of Ukraine, however they are taking no risks, with preparations put into place in the event of an attack.

The ancient quarter of Lviv, dating from the 13th century, is a world heritage site.

Heritage experts have previously expressed concern about the loss of artistic and historical monuments across Ukraine.
