Audi driver gets 12 points for mobile phone use and narrowly escapes disqualification under old UK mobile phone laws
A London driver got what was coming to him when he was caught on camera using his mobile at the wheel.
This driver was filmed swiping away at the wheel in June 2021 by CyclingMikey, one of tens of thousands of video camera cyclists, and was later prosecuted.
He was caught again holding the phone in November 2021, but isn't reported as there was not enough evidence under the laws governing mobile phone use while driving in force at the time.
The laws have since been updated to cover more types of phone use while at the wheel.
The driver went to court in March 2022, where he plead guilty when CyclingMikey arrived at court as a called witness.
He had six points deducted from his licence and was handed a fine of around 400 pounds.
As he already had six points off his licence for two prior speeding offences, he was automatically considered for disqualification. UK licences start with nine points, and have points deducted for driving offences, until the points reach zero, at which stage drivers are commonly, if not always, barred from driving for a period.
In court, the driver makes an 'exceptional hardship' plea and is spared the disqualification, but not the points and fine.
