Massive waves slam coast of southern Spain after authorities warn of METEOTSUNAMI
Massive waves slammed into the coast of Spain today (April 4) after Spanish authorities warned of a possible meteotsunami.
Footage captured at around 6 pm local time showed waves measuring more than 3 metres pounding the shore in the town of San Jose in Almeria and completely covering beaches with white water.
Spain's weather agency AEMET activated alerts for a meteotsunami or "rissaga" late last week.
Meteotsunamis are tsunami-like sea waves produced by rapid changes in barometric pressure, rather than seismic activity.
Meteotsunamis can be powerful and cause destruction to coastal areas.
"The beach completely disappeared," said the filmer.
"I don't know if this is definitely the meteotsunami but these are the biggest waves I've ever seen hit the coast of the Mediterranean," he added.
