5 homes destroyed with 3 firefighters injured at 2nd alarm blaze in Shamokin, Pennsylvania #2

10:33 Northumberland County Communications Center (NCCC) dispatched 34 box a working structure fire at 561 North 1st Street, Shamokin.
Chief 102 confirmed a working fire while trying to evacuate the structures. At the same time Shamokin Police arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire showing on the “C” side of 5 homes with negative entrapment. This was eventually upgraded to a 2nd alarm bringing additional fire apparatus from 3 counties to extinguish this blaze.
Alpha 1 confirmed the closest hydrants to the fire for inbound units.
Chief 30 assumed command while adding additional apparatus manpower as the tight and limited access street made it difficult for some apparatus to get close to the scene.
Several ladder trucks were positioned on side “C” (2nd street) for ladder pipe operations with fire apparatus staging at Turkey Hill (1 block away) Crews remained on scene until after 1400 before being released by command.
Live Power lines dropping from side “C” added to hazards fire fighters had to deal with.
Shamokin Assistant Fire Chief Ken Pilkus wsa brought under control by 11:40 hrs.

During the blaze 3 firefighter were injured with two were treated on scene and one being transported to the hospital for an evaluation with his status of injury being unknown.
The cause of the fire was also under investigation with Shamokin Police Chief Raymond Siko investigating.
The Red Cross is assisting the 5 residence that have been displaced due to the fire.
