This pool footage from Wednesday (April 20) shows residents of the hard-hit city of Mariupol, Ukraine awaiting this long column of buses and ambulances in nearby Orekhov in order to flee the city where Russia has threatened to kill any troops that haven't surrendered.

A Russian ultimatum to Ukrainian troops in Mariupol to surrender or die expired on Wednesday afternoon with no mass capitulation, but the commander of a unit believed to be holding out in the besieged city said his forces could survive just days or hours.

Human rights groups estimate that 5 million Ukrainians have become refugees since February 24, the day the invasion was launched.

"We are waiting for the fulfillment of our obligations from the other side," the Mariupol City Council reports.
