Locals collect wild snails from river to cook them in delicious curry dish
Locals collect wild snails from a river and cook them into a delicious curry dish in southern Thailand.
The meal, called 'Kaeng Hoi Jub Chaeng', has an aromatic flavour from spices made into curry paste and coconut milk. It is the region's signature dish in Phang Nga province.
To gather snails, Koh Kiam Seafood Restaurant owner Panranee Khamdee takes a boat out from the village pier for 20 minutes during a high tide and handpicks the creatures that were crawling on the mangrove trees.
The snails are then taken back to the restaurant and soaked for two nights to release dirt before they are cooked and served in a bowl of curry for 150 THB (3.47 GBP).
Panranee said: ‘Sometimes the fishermen managed to collect more than 10 kilograms in a day and they’d make at least 1,000 THB (23.16 GBP) for selling them.
‘Customers are welcome to pre-order our famous dish through our social media page or phone. We can deliver anywhere in the country.’
