A homemade rocket from an annual festival honoring the rain gods crashed onto a villager's house in northeast Thailand.

The projectile was launched into the sky during festivities on May 15, but struck the building in Nong Hoi village, Yasothon province, when it plummeted back down. The rocket left a large dent on the galvanised iron sheet roof.

The homeowners brought down the three-metre-long PVC pipe and found that it bore the logo of the hosts for this year's Rocket Festival.

Pin Phanthukaew, 37, the homeowner’s daughter, said: 'While I was doing laundry, I heard the first rocket being launched. After about five minutes, my sister screamed that the rocket was heading towards her house and later fell onto her rooftop.'

After the inspection, police ordered the festival hosts to compensate the property owner for damages. The hosts had reportedly earlier bought insurance for any damage that might happen because of the rocket-launching event.

Thailand's annual rocket festival is held during the second weekend of May every year. During the celebration, rockets are fired into the sky to pay homage to the rain god Phaya Thaen as they are believed to penetrate the clouds to welcome the rainy season.

Governor Chonlathee Youngtrong said: ‘People believe that this event is the act of worship to the rain spirit who will bring rain to the villages and a good crop of rice.'

The best DIY rocket during the festival was awarded a prize of 30,000 baht (698 GBP).
