This driver uses a homemade solar-powered car to save on petrol costs in the Philippines.

Arjay Marfa, 36, bought his eco-friendly four-wheeler from a mechanic friend 'at the local bar' and now uses it to deliver sacks of rice for his small business in Tanauan City, Batangas province.

The vehicle, which he purchased for a reasonable 50,000 PHP (about 910 USD), is fitted with solar panels on its roof and can reportedly run for 20 miles on just a single charge of two to three hours under the sun. On a cloudless day, the car can function indefinitely, Arjay said.

He added: 'It's more reliable compared to my old jeep, which consumed so much gasoline and had a higher maintenance cost.'

Fuel costs in the Philippines have been increasing for four straight weeks this June.

The country's energy department warned that pump prices may reach 100 PHP (roughly two USD) per litre if the trend continues. They blamed the price hikes on global demand and the continuing conflict between Russia and Ukraine disrupting supply chains.
