Hundreds of people attended a large bonfire in the center of Belfast to kick off the 12th of July celebrations after midnight on July 12.

Historically, bonfires are lit on this date as it symbolizes the beacons that Protestant King William of Orange used during the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, which resulted in victory over Catholic King James.

The date is celebrated by many loyalist and protestant communities throughout Northern Ireland.

Molotov cocktails and flares could be seen during the proceedings with the fire also threatening to burn a nearby apartment.

Firefighters could be seen hosing the building down to prevent any damage.
