A young carpenter creates incredible sculptures of figures and cartoon superheroes in Vietnam.

Duy Tran, 25, came from a family of traditional carvers before learning his craft in Quang Nam province.

The young artist practiced by making Buddha statues and images of monks in his family's workshop, until he began carving intricate sculptures of characters from his favourite Japanese manga Dragon Ball Z.

From his first modern figure Son Goku, he now has a collection ranging from One Punch Man's Saitama to Avengers' Iron Man, and even famous footballer Lionel Messi.

Proud carpenter Duy said: ‘I'm not the biggest fan of manga, but there are some comics that I repeatedly read, like Dragon Ball.'

He added that he waited before he was skillful enough before chiseling out an image of Goku on a piece of hardwood.

He said: ‘I had wanted to do this for a long time. I choose animation characters because I like them and Son Goku is my favourite. I waited until I was skilful enough.'

Duy's father was the first to learn woodcarving in their village and has taught more than 100 apprentices over 30 years. Their village developed the industry and it has been generating income for several families over the years.

Now, Duy is continuing his family's craft and is encouraging more youngsters to learn woodcarving with his modern art.

He said: ‘When I started to learn to be a sculptor, I didn't like those products because I had seen them every day since I was a kid. They left me feeling bored, but I kept learning the craft to enhance my skills. Now I found inspiration in animation, which is what I try to teach other people my age.'

Duy's other works include Spider-Man, Hulk, Batman, Godzilla and Kong, transformer T-Rex, Goku, Majin, and One Piece's Luffy.

Duy sells the pieces through his website woodartvietnam.com.
