More than 700 asylum seekers from various countries were forced to sleep outside the Dutch main refugee center in Ter Apel for days because they could not get access to safe shelters due to overcrowding.

The refugee centre has an official capacity of 2,000 people and has run out of beds. Mark Rutt, the Dutch Prime Minister, said that he is ashamed of the situation. The government is now trying to find an alternative solution.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF/Doctors Without Borders) has been deployed to the Netherlands for the first time to provide medical assistance.
