Mahmood To Unveil Fast-Track Deportation Plans In Major Asylum System Overhaul. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will today announce sweeping reforms to the UK’s asylum and immigration system, including plans to fast-track deportations of illegal migrants. In a statement to MPs, she will outline proposals to end multiple appeals, overhaul elements of human rights legislation, and tighten long-term rules for those granted asylum. Under the new system, successful asylum applicants would receive temporary protection only, face return if their home country becomes safe, and wait 20 years before applying for permanent settlement. Mahmood will also warn that the UK will stop issuing visas to nationals of three African countries unless their governments improve cooperation on removals. She told the BBC the reforms are a “moral mission” to address an issue that is “tearing our country apart.” Shadow immigration minister Matt Vickers said the measures were “a small step in the right direction” but argued the government must go further, calling for failed asylum seekers to be deported within a week of arrival. Some Labour MPs, however, say the plans take the country “in completely the wrong direction.”
