Roads were left underwater after Hurricane Ian made landfall as a powerful Category 4 storm in Florida on Wednesday.

Footage shows a neighbourhood inundated with floods as a storm surge - a sudden rise in sea level due to winds and pressure changes during a storm - roared towards the coast of Fort Myers on September 28.

Resident Ibrahim said: 'No road, no parking lot, no pool. Water getting down. This is what the hurricane eye left behind.'

Ian crossed into Florida on Wednesday, barreling into Cayo Costa while packing winds of up to 150 mph, the US National Hurricane Center said.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the storm is among the strongest the state has experienced, tearing through homes and bringing catastrophic flooding reaching 12 feet in some areas as more than two million residents are left without power.

Ian has weakened into a Category 1 hurricane and is expected to emerge over the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday afternoon while continuing to batter Florida.
