Coast Guard breaks ice to free NYPD vessel on Hudson River
Coast guards broke ice to free an NYPD vessel trapped near Pier 86 on the Hudson River following a winter storm.
Footage shows the NYPD Harbour David surrounded by frozen waters as the Coast Guard Cutter Hawser approached on January 26.
The US Coast Guard Northeast said: 'Coast Guard icebreaking operations help keep waterways safe, navigable, and open. We continue supporting emergency response, commerce, and the delivery of critical supplies to communities during winter conditions. Safety of mariners, the public, and our crews remains our top priority.
'Working alongside our local partners, Hawser ensured the NYPD vessel could safely reposition and continue operations.'
At least 42 people have died in the United States during the winter storm that created the icy conditions.
