A savvy mum has shared how you can recreate the McDonalds sausage and egg McMuffin using products from Aldi – and the best part is, it only costs 89p per person.

As food prices continue to rise, many families are being forced to look for cheaper, alternative meals, as well as cutting down on takeaways.

Super-saving mum Jamie Salter, 36, from Bromley, has not only managed to cut down her weekly shop, but has also created a budget fakeaway costing just £5.34 for six portions.

Her video has gone viral with over 290,000 views and 8,200 likes.

"Being a large family with four kids ranging from 4-14 [in age], fast food is quickly becoming far too expensive," Jamie told NeedToKnow.Online.

"The average McDonalds breakfast for six of us was costing around £30!

"I saw the pork patties in my local Aldi, so I thought I'd see if i could put together a fakeaway!

"The whole meal cost £4.89 at McDonalds but making the meal with Aldi products cost around 89p.

"It was a no-brainer to try!"

Jamie has also shared the recipe and cost breakdown for her creation (see fact box below).

She said: "Pop the patties and hash brown in at same time, I put mine in the air fryer for six-eight minutes.

"Depending on how long you have to cook and the method you use, the patties and hash browns can also be grilled/fried!

"I added an egg to buttered mould, covered it with clingfilm and microwaved for one minute!

"Be careful with the egg as it can spit and pop.

"Then I just toasted the muffin and added butter before assembling the patty, cheese and egg.

"The family absolutely adore them.

"Everyone agrees they are far better than McDonalds, the hash browns are less greasy.

"They often ask for seconds!

"I would say always buy double products though.

"Trust me, the family will scoff them down.

"They are also so easy to make, which means the older kids often enjoy cooking these for the family."

Jamie shared her fakeaway creation online to help inspire other families who may be struggling with food costs – and viewers love the food hack.

"Make these most mornings. Those hash browns are BETTER than McDonalds," her post read.

One person wrote: "Love it. My go to for a while. I'd have toasted the muffin in a toaster though. Save that 2 minutes."

"Cost me £20 just for 2 meals & 2 flatbreads so will definitely give this a go" added another.

Someone else said: "Had one of these this morning, and can confirm it tastes EXACTLY the same"

"Whoa the egg! How clever, how did you do that?" said another user.

Another viewer wrote: "Mate £5 a meal [sic] I was so shocked I spent nearly £20 the other morning on McDonald’s breakfast wth."

"Instead of the breakfast muffin, try it in one of Aldi's kebab wraps. Game changer," said someone else.

As well as saving money on fakeaways, Jamie has some alternative hacks that may help with the food shop budget.

She added: "My biggest budgeting tip, is ALWAYS check Aldi or Lidl before any other supermarket.

"They do copies of most labelled brands and I was wary at first to try but they have lived up to all expectations.

"Find out what time of day your supermarket reduce some of their items that need selling that day and freeze whatever you buy, but only buy what you know you will use!

"I also buy frozen veg, onions, garlic, chilli, ginger and herbs, this has saved me so much money compared to buying fresh.

"Lastly, always make a meal plan every Sunday night and only buy what ingredients you need for your chosen meals.

"I give each child a day that they can pick dinner, that way I know they will eat it and its fun to get them to help."

BREAKDOWN:

Sausage patties - 29p each
Hash browns - 17p each
Bread muffins - 16p each
Eggs - 18p each
Cheese slices - 9p each

Total - 89p
