A couple have splashed £2,000 on creating their very own haunted house in a bid to share their “obsession” with the spooky holiday.

Lorna Smith, 30, and her girlfriend, Carly Jennings, 34, a support worker, both from Bootle, Liverpool, are self-proclaimed Halloween “fanatics” – and each year they deck out their home with “bone-chilling” decorations.

Growing up, they recall being eager to get their best costumes on and knock on strangers’ houses in the hopes for a treat, not a trick.

Now, they’ve taken their obsession to the next level and have created their very own interactive haunted house – which is available to the public for free.

“I’ve always been obsessed with Halloween, as it’s the best time of the year,” said Lorna.

“I’m a bit eccentric, so I come up with an idea and roll with it, while making it over the top of course.

“We decided to open our doors to the public, as we put so much effort in and it’s only right to let people take a look around.

“Kids love it on the way to school and their reaction from outside is amazing, as they’re always giggling away and the parents are left in awe.

“It’s a community event, so we’re able to get to know everyone’s faces, and it’s a nice feeling to have everyone enjoy something we’ve done.”

For the past three years, they’ve created a haunted house like no other, with themes such as creepy carnival and Greckans Gulch – a “free for all” spookfest,

Now, they’ve created a “mega ghost ship” which is akin to Pirate’s of the Caribbean – complete with homemade “soul jumping” decorations.

A mermaid, who has seen better days, greets guests as they walk past the house – with rusted features encompassing her skeletal form.

Multiple skulls, which light up inside with neon green, are placed atop the gate and fixed with cobwebs and ivy which blows in the wind.

Dotted red lights are scattered across the front porch, with torn black pieces of fabric bringing attention to the spooky sights on offer.

In total, they’ve spent an estimated £2,000 on the project, with more still to come, and say they begin piecing everything together two months prior.

Lorna said: “I’ve tried to upcycle and recycle all our decorations, in an attempt to spend less money on buying anything which catches our eye.

“Everything is completely handmade, so the only costs are supplies to make the bits brand new.

“I think our most expensive project is the skull arch, which has 13 skulls on and is revamped each year for a different look.

“It’s got chicken wire, trees and branches which we’ve collected and it’s a project which has lasted a few years and cost a couple hundred.”

As their local area eagerly awaits the spook-tacular, they claim people queue for hours to catch a glimpse of the masterpiece – and they expect this year to be even longer.

Lorna said: “We’ve always had brilliant receptions and never a bad word said about it.

“I think our neighbours are also fans, and as far as I’m aware, they really like the house.

“I’m constantly in my notes creating pages and pages of ideas, and because I’ve planned so far ahead, I know the next few themes.

“We’ve had little bits of help here and there, especially from our neighbours who helped to cut masks in half, as well as a few other bits.

“But we’ve been working on this since August, so whenever we get a chance, we start putting decorations up.”

Usually, the pair offer the spine-tingling activity for free, but in a bid to raise funds for some family friends who sadly passed away earlier this year, they’re asking for donations.

She added: “We only do this for the love and everything is so important to us, as we wanted to make it memorable.

“It’s part of the reason why we keep the inside a total secret, as this adds to the awe and excitement of it all.

“It’s sad when we have to take it down, so we keep up it up for a few days afterwards and I think we’ll need to invest in a storage unit soon, as there’s so much.

“But it’s something free and for the kids to enjoy, so we hope our love of Halloween gives something for people to smile about.”

On 31 October, for one night only, the house will be open to the public with six people allowed in at a time – but don’t forget to check your surroundings, as you never know what might be lurking.
