At least 16 people were killed while 17 more are still missing after a landslide struck a campsite in Malaysia early Friday morning.

The campers were staying at a farm in Selangor state, in the outskirts of the capital Kuala Lumpur, when a chunk of land rolled into the farm stay at 3 am local time on December 15.

Authorities said 94 people were caught in the avalanche's path. At least 16 campers, including a child, were found dead, while 61 people were safely rescued.

Seventeen more are still missing.

The Selangor fire department said the landslide tumbled 100 feet above the campsite, burying a one-acre area near the Father's Organic Farm.

Aerial footage shows a long strip of forested land stripped bare after the soil had rushed downhill and buried trees along its path.

In a statement, Malaysian minister for natural resources, environment and climate change Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said: 'I pray that the missing victims can be found safely soon.

'The rescue team has been working since early. I'm going down there today.'

Flood warnings have been raised over Selangor amid forecasts of torrential rain in the region. However, no rain or earthquakes were recorded prior to the landslide.

Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
