London's Black Boy Lane: Some residents oppose name change despite racial connotations

The renaming of Black Boy Lane in Tottenham, London, has taken effect today (January 23).

Haringey Council took action after residents denounced the racial connotations of the street name, and protests led by Black Lives Matter.

The street was named after a historic pub. The council said that the business "depicted a racially caricatured image of a black person until it was replaced as a result of pressure from local residents in the 1980s."

The road is now called La Rose Lane to remember John La Rose, a publisher, and activist. He founded the first specialist Caribbean publishing company in Britain.

Many residents have opposed the name change, putting a writing that reads Black Boy Lane on their homes.

Following George Floyd's death in 2020, many streets and buildings have been renamed in London to protect and respect the different cultural, ethnic, and religious communities.
