The 77th Clowns International church service held to commemorate the father of modern clowning Joseph Grimaldi, and other clowns who have passed, took place once more in-person after several years of virtual events (February 5).

All kinds of clowns in colourful costumes filled All Saints Church in East London, as members-of-the-public joined them in a less-than conventional service, which saw clowns lose their trousers, blow bubbles, juggle and generally misbehave.

Joseph Grimaldi, a Regency-era actor was born in 1778 and developed his own style of clowning, performing in West End theatres.
