Spectacular bright green bolide streaks across sky in China
Residents in several cities including Beijing, Tianjin, Chifeng in Inner Mongolia and Chengde in Hebei witnessed a bright green bolide streaking across the sky on March 27.
The videos captured the ultra-bright bolide starting off as green and then flashing red midway before ending with another burst of red.
It was a very bright fireball with its luminosity even surpassing that of a full moon.
According to Zhu Jin, a researcher at the Beijing Planetarium, the bolide could correspond to a very large meteoroid. It may not have been completely burned up and some meteorites may have fallen.
The green light emitted by the fireball is related to the physical properties of the meteoroid and the material produced by ionization as it passes through the Earth's atmosphere.
Based on calculations, the meteor is believed to be a sporadic meteor. From the current data, the brightness of the closest data point to the zenith was brighter than -16 magnitude, which is brighter than a full moon.
The footage provided by local media includes four clips taken in Beijing, Tianjin, Chifeng in Inner Mongolia, and Chengde in Hebei respectively.
