A massive dust devil ripped through a carpark in front of locals.

Footage shows the smoke-like weather phenomenon taking shape about 15ft-away from cars in Pampanga province, the Philippines, on April 3.

An amused resident and his friend ran after the twister that moved towards the mango trees.

However, less than a minute later, the rotating vortex disappeared upon hitting one of the trees.

Resident Jasper Andres said: ‘It was the first time I had seen such a thing. We were amazed and a bit scared.'

Dust devil tornadoes are types of whirlwinds that form when the sun heats a patch of land and the air above becomes warmer and rises quickly.

Cooler air then moves into the low-pressure gap left by the rising warm air. The new drafts of cooler air also heat up and rise and the cycle continues, picking up dust and debris and making the spiral visible.

They are not as dangerous as supercell tornadoes, which can cause severe damage.
