A dust devil whipped debris into the air at a market in Thailand.

The weather was dry and hot when suddenly a gust formed on the edge of Khao Kayai Market which gained height and force in Chonburi province on December 15.

Footage shows the vortex ripping across umbrella tent stalls and picking up plastic bags and trash 20ft above the ground.

The weather phenomenon wandered onto the road and lost shape until it reached to the other end of the market.

Hasanah Saengman, who was at the grocery store on the other side of the road said: ‘Suddenly, the wind intensified and the tornado appeared.

‘I was frightened as I had never seen one before. I stopped recording before it was fully gone.'

Dust devil tornadoes are types of whirlwinds that form when the sun heats a patch of land and the air above becomes warmer and rises quickly.

Cooler air then moves into the low-pressure gap left by the rising warm air. The new drafts of cooler air also heat up and rise and the cycle continues, picking up dust and debris and making the spiral visible.

They are not as dangerous as supercell tornadoes, which can cause severe damage.
