On March 12, 2023, a police officer-involved shooting took place in St. Petersburg, Florida, which was captured on the body cameras of two police officers. The first video was filmed by Corporal Matt Aitken and showed his point of view during the incident. He and his K-9 partner, Taco, were tracking a burglary suspect named Zion Bostick when they found themselves in a back garden. Aitken caught up with Bostick and ordered him to put his hands up. However, Bostick opened fire on the officer, shooting him three times and causing him to fall to the ground. More shots were heard before the video ended.

The second video was captured by Aitken's partner, Sergeant Jake Viano, who witnessed the entire incident unfold before his eyes. He saw Aitken being shot and drew his weapon, but Bostick opened fire on him, forcing him to take cover. However, Viano was able to see his partner's K-9 partner, Taco, attack Bostick and bite him, allowing Viano to open fire on Bostick five times. After shooting Bostick, Viano shouted at him to show his hands.

According to local media reports, Bostick was found with two guns and ammunition in his backpack. He did not survive the incident. Pinellas County Sheriff's Office issued a statement on April 6, 2023, stating that Corporal Matt Aitken and K-9 Taco were tracking a burglary suspect accompanied by Sergeant Jake Viano. Bostick ambushed Aitken and shot him three times. However, the heroic actions of K-9 Taco and Sergeant Viano helped save Aitken's life.

Aitken survived the ordeal and is currently recovering from his injuries. During a press conference, he expressed his gratitude for the support he has received during his rehabilitation process. The release of the footage provided an insight into the dangerous work that police officers undertake on a daily basis and highlighted the importance of their bravery and dedication to keeping the public safe.
