A cargo ship carrying alumina has sunk off the coast of Sakhalin, Russia. The ship had encountered 10-point ice and gave a distress signal on February 23. The 21 crew members, all Chinese citizens, were forced to abandon ship and went onto the ice before being rescued by another vessel.

Specialists were deployed to the site to repair the hole in the ship's hull and stop other leaks. However, despite their best efforts over several days, the ship continued to take on water and eventually sank on the morning of March 1, 2023. The vessel now lies at a depth of 253 meters.

Alumina is a crucial material used in the production of aluminum. The cargo aboard the sunken ship is estimated to be worth several million dollars. The environmental impact of the incident remains unclear, as it is not yet known if any of the cargo has spilled into the sea.
