Cargo ship capsizes in choppy sea as all crew are rescued
A cargo ship capsized as it was battered by choppy seas off the coast of the Philippines.
The LCT Golden Phoenix was delivering construction materials when it was struck by rough waters on Thursday, August 7.
Powerful waves swept the vessel toward shallow waters, where it ran aground near the San Miguel Bay in Camarines Sur.
Footage shows the vessel, a Landing Craft Tank with a shallow bottom, tilted to one side as it was stranded in the shallows.
The Coast Guard District Bicol (CGDBCL) said all 13 crew members onboard were rescued unharmed.
It said in a statement on August 9: 'Initial attempts to conduct a full inspection were deferred due to unfavorable sea conditions. The ship's captain and shipping company representatives have since taken immediate action, including arranging for a hull inspection by divers and preparing necessary documentation for maritime procedures.
'Follow-up investigations conducted by Coast Guard Sub Station Tamban together with Coast Guard Mobile Team Siruma and the Marine Environmental Protection Enforcement and Reponse Group Bicol (MEP ERG BCL), revealed that the agrounding was caused by strong winds and currents in the area. Further, the vessel was also reportedly carrying construction materials when the incident occurred.'
The Coast Guard added no oil spill has been reported and the area was being monitored.
The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
