Shocked woman finds insects crawling from cleaning brushes at restaurant in Singapore
A restaurant in Singapore has apologised after a shocked woman spotted insects crawling on its cleaning brushes used to scrub woks.
The eagle-eyed mall-goer was passing by the Wok Hey outlet at the Compass One mall on Monday when she noticed the tiny winged bugs crawling over the worn-looking bristles.
The woman told local media she was disgusted by the creepy crawlies in the kitchen.
She said: 'It made my hair stand on end. No more Wok Hey for me. My kids really love Wok Hey too, but I guess they will stop eating it after watching this video.'
A Wok Hey spokesman initially said the kiosk's open area may have attracted the insects, and assured customers that the brushes were being cleaned daily.
In another statement, the restaurant said they found that their cleaning contractors had not followed standard operating procedures, and left the brushes dirty after business hours.
The statement read: 'We take all hygiene matters at our outlets seriously. We engage a professional cleaning company to deep clean and sanitise our outlets after operating hours on a daily basis.
'We are working closely with our cleaning contractor to ensure contractual standards are being fulfilled.'
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said they are now investigating the Wok Hey branch.
It said: 'Food safety is a joint responsibility. While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices.'
