A frantic local spotted a dust devil tornado rotating in the fields in Illinois.

Footage shows the weather phenomenon whipping up debris from the dry patch of land as it rotated across the open area on May 5.

Shocked Hunter OConnor said in the video: ‘It's a f****** tornado. It's a f****** tornado.

'That's the start of a tornado right there building. It's building, dude.'

The dust devil disappeared in less than five minutes wandering in the vast fields. No one was hurt or damaged.

Dust devil tornadoes are types of whirlwinds that form when the sun heats a patch of land and the air above becomes warmer and rises quickly.

Cooler air then moves into the low-pressure gap left by the rising warm air. The new drafts of cooler air also heat up and rise and the cycle continues, picking up dust and debris and making the spiral visible.

They are not as dangerous as supercell tornadoes, which can cause severe damage.
