A fierce storm battered a popular tourist island as the Philippines entered its monsoon rainy season.

Fierce wind and rain lashed Boracay island in Aklan province on May 31, battering beachfront shops and churning up tall waves.

Local and foreign tourists hoping to enjoy a sunny tropical vacation were forced indoors to take shelter from the roaring storm.

Backpacker Rhana Caboverde said: 'The rain finally subsided, but we lost a day at the beach because of it.'

State weather bureau PAGASA declared the official start of the Philippines' rainy season on June 2.

The Philippines, Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are entering their monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
