Weaving Cultural Heritage: Discovering Minangkabau's Gold Thread Embroidery Tradition
A gold thread embroidery craftsman is working on a commissioned embroidered fabric at his home in Air Bangis, West Pasaman, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Typically, the time required to complete one fabric order ranges from two weeks to two months, depending on the size and complexity of the design. The variety of design motifs is inspired by everything found in the surrounding nature. Some motifs that were once used by the Minangkabau nobility cannot be used arbitrarily.
Gold thread embroidery is usually reserved for traditional ceremonies, ranging from weddings to the appointment of village leaders. For centuries, this craft has been passed down through generations, carrying with it philosophical values and a captivating cultural identity.
