A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck southern California on Sunday, simultaneously struck by Tropical Storm Hilary.

Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist and author of the book "The Big Ones," said that although there is no relationship between plate activity and weather at the surface, a significant amount of rainwater could, in theory, cause seismic disturbances.

"Water pressure in the ground affects faulting," Jones explained. "If you build a large reservoir and significantly increase the pore pressure, that is, the pressure of the fluids in the ground, earthquakes could occur. It's a well-known fact."
