STORYLINE:

Cameroonian Minister of Water and Energy Gaston Eloundou Essomba on Monday laid the foundation stone of a Chinese-aided water project in Garoua Boulai, a town in the country's East Region.

The launch constitutes the second phase of the project, which aims to improve water production and supply in nine cities of the Central African nation. The project will be implemented by the Chinese construction company CGCOC Group.

SOUNDBITE 1 (French): GASTON ELOUNDOU ESSOMBA, Cameroonian Minister of Water and Energy
"Our people need clean tap water badly and in 36 months we'll have it. I hope CGCOC can be as professional as always to accomplish this project. What do we expect from the cooperation between Cameroon and China? We hope it could be more fruitful."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LU CHUNYU, General manager of CGCOC Group
"The water supply project for nine cities is a typical livelihood project of China-Africa cooperation and China-Cameroon cooperation. The construction of the project will provide more than 1,000 jobs. After its completion, it will provide more than 50,000 tonnes of clean water per day."

The project was launched in 2014 with the first phase of construction completed in four cities. This second phase targets the cities of Garoua-Boulai, Dschang, Garoua, Maroua and Yabassi.
