SOUNDBITE (English): BAN KI-MOON, Former UN secretary-general
"I think there is a very serious issue, a fundamental issue, you have been hit by the climate crisis. The climate crisis has affected all the places, but mostly it is people like yourselves that are hit hardest. Climate phenomena may be a global crisis but the impact is felt locally by people like yourselves. Therefore United Nations during my time and even now during my successor's time is trying to mobilize all necessary funding and they are working very closely with all member states, particularly rich country people. We are here to help Kenyan people, African people and many other people living in abject poverty to be able to adapt to this crisis situation. So please do not lose your hope!"
Nearly 60 percent of urban residents, and one billion people around the world, live in informal settlements. Residents in these settlements are extremely vulnerable to multiple climate hazards like extreme rainfall, heat, fires and water scarcity.
